BRAGA SELECTED AS HOST CITY OF THE XVII UNESCO CREATIVE CITIES NETWORK ANNUAL MEETING IN 2024

To commemorate this year’s World City Day, the General Director of UNESCO announced that Braga has been selected as a Host City of the XVI UNESCO Creative Cities Network Annual Meeting in 2024.

After the presentations by cities during the XIV Annual Conference in July 2022, an online vote was held by the UCCN Secretariat to select the Host City for the XVI Annual Meeting. As a result, Braga city was chosen by member cities as the Host City of the Annual Conference in 2024.

As a unique international platform for exchange, the UCCN Annual Conference gathers Creative Cities worldwide together to promote culture and creative solutions that enable them to deal with contemporary urban challenges.

Through the XVI UCCN Annual Conference, Braga city aims to foster international cooperation among young people. Revolving around the theme of “Bringing Youth to the negotiation for the Next Decade”, the Conference will provide member cities with a platform to share knowledge, experiences and good practices towards building sustainable cities of the future.

This year, the Annual Conference is held in Santos, a Creative City of cinema since 2017, bringing the conference to Latin America and the Caribbean region for the first time. Under the theme “Innovation, the path to equality”, more than 220 city representatives, including mayors, city decision makers, experts and other stakeholders, worked to further promote culture and creativity to underpin sustainable economic and social development in cities. Next year, the Annual Conference will be held in Istanbul, a UNESCO Creative Design City, with the aim of strengthening UCCN’s commitment to shaping “Cities Against the Future”.

“Act Local to Go Global” is the center of this year’s World City Day. It provides an ideal opportunity for UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network to showcase the transformative power of cities and their ability to promote local solutions for global sustainability, particularly those built on culture and creativity, whether it’s crafts and folk arts, design, film, gastronomy, literature, media arts or music.
