Heritage education for the young generation – a creative program to get double benefits
Heritage education makes students learn more about historical relics. Besides, the program helps students not only treasure the traditional values, history and culture of their ancestors but also build up their patriotism and national pride.

Kill two birds with one stone

The management boards of relic sites are holding many interesting programs such as the program “I’m an archaeologist”, and “I learn about heritage,” at Thang Long Imperial Citadel; the gala titled “I learn to speak” with the theme of Hoa Lo Prison historical relic; a contest themed “Learning more about the Temple of Literature and the history of Thang Long – Hanoi”…
It can be seen that while many relics have trouble promoting the heritage’s value, others in Hanoi did the well-done job, thanks to the heritage education program.
The program not only spreads the heritage’s value to many people, especially students but also evokes the young generation of learning history.
Currently, many relics in Hanoi are developing heritage education for students in creative ways.
In fact, after organizing the heritage education program, the relic management boards have appealed a lot of the participation of schools and students.
For example, nearly 20,000 students participating in the program at Thang Long Imperial Citadel and Co Loa relic after one year of cooperation between the Hanoi Department of Education and Training and the Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Centre.

Besides, the number of schoolchildren visiting the two sites outside the program also amounted to an impressive figure of nearly 100,000.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen, Head of the department of guidance and explanation at the Thang Long-Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center, said that the Heritage Education Program strengthened the linkage within the heritage and the school and the family, raised the responsibility of the community and the young generation in preserving the precious national heritage.
When participating in these programs, students and pupils can lead their plans and be creative with heritage-oriented activities. To participate in the programs, the children themselves must actively search for information about the heritage in advance.
Not only the participants but also the supporters are so excited and interested in these activities. Most of the students participating in and experiencing the heritage education feel so stimulated and enthusiastic.
Heritage education makes students learn more about the historical relics. Besides, the program helps students not only treasure the traditional values, the history and the culture of their ancestors but also educate their patriotism and national pride.
By this way, they will acquire a lot of useful things such as the collective spirit, the discipline, the observing world around them. They will have basic understandings of the value of cultural relics, practice many skills… After the practical experience, when the children come back to school, they do know how to love and respect the nation’s history and cultural traditions.
Creative methods
The heritage education program has promoted the heritage value, brought the heritage come to life, and fostered the love for national history in the young generation.
Therefore, the renovation of heritage education has always been explored and applied by centers and management boards of heritage.
Mr. Le Xuan Kieu, Director of the Temple of Literature relic site shared that the heritage education activities under the new method have been promoted. Strengthening the experience programs, and the interactions on which will be focused to encourage students to participate

The students to the Temple of Literature will get better learn and be aware of the diverse values of the Temple of Literature,. They will develop many skills through positive and creative activities.
The topics within the framework of the heritage education, including the combination of folklore elements and modern technology facilities, keep being built to develop the “Heritage experience area”. They will make experience activities more exciting and interesting.
The presentations were designed to meet the diverse needs of visitors. The exhibits have been improved. They are organized with effective and modern methods, contributing to better the attraction of the Temple of Literature.
Also, with Hoa Lo Prison Relic, besides the “I learn to speak” program organized every summer, a new program titled “Bringing Hoa Lo Prison Relic come to the public” will be carried out at the beginning of this June at the Hoan Kiem pedestrian zone on weekends by the Relic Management Board.

This activity is planned as a target toward teaching history, arousing the interest in learning history with all objects, and promoting the value of the relic.
Hoa Lo Prison Relic Management Board cooperated with Hanoi Youth Union, universities, schools, organizations inside and outside the city to hold many sightseeing activities with the purpose of learning and exchanging the historical background knowledge.
As a result, the management board has successfully brought the Hoa Lo prison approach visitors, despite in fact that many tourists haven’t ever known this relic or had the fear of visiting it before.
By being explained clearly and accurately any information and experience activities, visitors gain new and fascinating views of the activities taking place at the relic.
Mr. Dang Van Bieu, Deputy head of Hoa Lo Prison relic management board shared that this program was a new method, which confirmed the sense of initiative of the management board in bringing the relic come to the public.
All in all, It’s undeniable that heritage education has brought positive results in recent years. Heritage education is one of the important solutions for preserving and promoting the values of heritage. It has effectively supported schools to educate students about culture and history.
Therefore, to promote heritage education, the responsibility of the preserving centers, the relic management boards, and the schools is necessary.
