Have you ever read a text that combines an essay and fictional narrative, a novel and poetry; where the plot is almost nonexistent, and the beauty lies in the characters’ efforts to avoid action and to refrain from creating a climax? This is the peculiar characteristic of Gối đầu lên cỏ (Kusamakura) – an experiment in ‘haiku novel’ (haikuteki shosetsu) created by Natsume Sōseki in the early 20th century. By depicting the encounter between two strange characters – a painter who paints with his gaze instead of a brush, and a woman who views life as a play she directs and enjoys herself – Sōseki explored the complex relationship between life, beauty, and various art forms such as painting, theater, novel, and poetry.
In the 3rd session of the series ‘Gối chữ | Japanese Literature Reading Circle,’ we will discuss the dialogue between different art forms and the clash between Eastern and Western aesthetics in Gối đầu lên cỏ by Sōseki. We invite you to read the text in advance at home, as per the instructions below, and join us at 19:30 on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Tổ Chim Xanh (27 Đặng Dung, Hanoi) for a discussion.
