D FREE BOOK LIBRARY WITH 3-NO RULE

With a three-no rule: No deposit; No fee charged; No limit on the book due, the D Free Book community library is a place where young book lovers can reach out to and immerse themselves in books.

To spread the reading culture and share books, D Free Book Library was established at the end of 2017 by Hoang Quy Binh, a former student of Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Hoang Quy Binh – the founder of the D Free Book library.

He thought that books lying idle on a shelf is wasted ammunition. They must be kept in constant circulation. Then he turned his rented room into a free library. Book lovers can come here to read books and even borrow them to read at home.

Currently, the library has more than 5,000 different books.

Initially, D Free Book only had more than 200 books. After 3 years of operation, the number of books has reached nearly 5000 including various book categories: skill books, literature, languages, science, comics, etc. To have such a huge number of books, Binh and his collaborators have carried out the activity “Redeeming garbage for gifts” every 2 weeks. After every activity, Bình has collected up to 1 to 2 tons of books. Some books will be classified and donated to the prison libraries, classroom libraries in the mountainous provinces, and the rest will be added to D Free Book.

When the library scale was small, Quy Binh managed the library by himself.  After a while, the number of readers increased; he began to expand and recruit more collaborators. Currently, D Free Book has 100 collaborators and two facilities. One is located at No 33, Lane 67 Le Thanh Nghi Street, Hai Ba Trung District. The other is located at No 2, Vien May alley, Pham Van Dong Street, Cau Giay District. Both of them open from 8 a.m to 9 p.m everyday.

“D looks like a smiling emoji.  And I want everyone coming here always feels happy, and receives a warm welcome like they are coming home.  And Free Book simply means reading books for free”, said he. Moreover, D free Book library has a three-no rule: No deposit, No fee charged, No limit on the book due.  As a result, the young man’s library not only attracts many readers but also spreading books with the trust of book lovers for each other.

The cost of maintaining the library’s activities is contributed by Binh, his collaborators, and readers who love the library, and is collected from the sale of trees and green products. In 3 years of operation, the D Free Book library faced many difficulties. “The biggest difficulty was operating costs. At the beginning of each month, I have to manage 7 million VND (300 USD) to pay for the rented place and other expenses. Another difficulty is about management, and how to spread the reading culture to more people. By the time the COVID-19 epidemic broke out, the library had lost about 80% of input books”, said Binh.

The members exchanged and singing to be closer to each other.

Each day D Free Book welcomes about 50 readers to borrow and return books. After 3 years of operation, the library has lent about 50,000 books in which there are mainly literature books, thinking skills. Regarding the upcoming plan, Quy Binh revealed: “We will open the project, Gentle classes, at the library to teach foreign languages such as English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Besides, there are art and piano classes for youngsters to take part in the evenings. Opening the classes can attract people to come and access to books.”
