Making up 65% of the workforce in Hanoi’s 1,350 craft villages, female artisans have continuously innovated, designed, and created a wide range of new products. By blending traditional techniques with contemporary styles, they have developed exquisite and valuable crafts. Through their work, they are helping to preserve and develop these villages while also inspiring the community to appreciate their heritage.
Women make up nearly 40% of small and medium-sized business owners in Hanoi, and over 67% in trade and services. These dynamic entrepreneurs are at the forefront of innovation, embracing science and technology, digital transformation, and e-commerce to enhance their businesses. Their efforts not only drive economic growth but also generate jobs for tens of thousands, contributing to social security and the sustainable development of the community.
In today’s landscape, science, technology, and innovation are not just important, they are the very foundation for economic growth, both nationally and here in Hanoi. This is precisely why the resolution of the 17th Hanoi Party Congress outlined a clear vision: ‘To vigorously innovate the growth model and restructure the economy based on the application of science, technology, and innovation’ and ‘To develop Hanoi into a modern and civilized capital.’ Unleashing the immense potential and creativity of women in Hanoi is essential to achieving these goals. It’s not just an option, it’s a necessity for our city’s progress.
Passion and creativity are essential.
But how do we unlock this potential and foster even greater innovation, particularly among women-led businesses?
According to Prof. Dr. Bùi Thị An, President of the Hanoi Association of Female Intellectuals, fostering the contributions and global integration of women in academia requires a multi-pronged approach. First and foremost, we need to cultivate an environment where women can fully participate in research, teaching, and various sectors of society. This involves prioritization of training and development programs specifically for women intellectuals. Crucially, there’s a need for policies on planning, promotion, and fair compensation that recognize and reward their contributions. This will not only boost morale but will attract and empower a new generation of women intellectuals across the country.
Additionally, it’s vital to promote awareness campaigns and educational initiatives on gender equality. Society needs a deeper understanding of the crucial role women play in national development. Furthermore, it’s critical to address existing inconsistencies in retirement age regulations for women, particularly those in fields like science, technology, culture, education, and healthcare, ensuring they align with contemporary needs and realities.
Ms. Đinh Thị Thúy, CEO of MISA Joint Stock Company, emphasizes that technology is key for modern women to excel both professionally and personally. Thanks to technological innovations, women can manage businesses from anywhere, anytime, using just their mobile devices. Not only does technology boost productivity, but it also frees up time for women to dedicate to research and developing effective strategies for their companies.
Professor Dr. Nguyễn Thị Chính also emphasizes the importance of dedication, passion, and resilience within women themselves. Finding a balance between professional and family life is crucial. She firmly believes that all women have the potential to engage in scientific research. However, success hinges on embracing innovation, adopting scientific working methods, and leveraging scientific and technological knowledge to excel in both work and life. Crucially, she highlights the need for families, colleagues, and society at large to create supportive environments that empower women in their pursuit of scientific endeavors.
This support system provides a strong foundation for women to thrive in scientific research and in life. However, government policies are also essential to ensure equal rights and opportunities for women in all spheres. This includes encouraging female officials to pursue higher education and implementing timely recognition and incentives for women who lead impactful research projects that contribute to real-world solutions.
The seminar also acknowledged the challenges women face when integrating technology into their lives and work. Overcoming these obstacles requires adaptability and a commitment to continuous learning, particularly in keeping pace with evolving technological trends. Women leading businesses need to not only identify opportunities for digital transformation but also embrace strategic investments. This includes allocating resources for technology adoption and dedicating time to develop teams with strong digital skills and adaptability. Ultimately, fostering a culture of innovation within businesses is vital, creating an environment where employees feel empowered to explore new ideas and implement technology in practical ways.
