“Charlie Chaplin – Memory of a Legend”: Exhibition recreates immortal film heritage
Charlie Chaplin once said, “A day without laughter is a day wasted.” Nearly a century later, that laughter still echoes, not only through the black-and-white silent films but also through hundreds of cherished and preserved artifacts: Faded international magazines, antique postcards, stamps, dolls, coins, and even a small canvas portrait of him carefully kept by Australian collector Paddy MacDonald for over 65 years.

From June 24 to July 22, 2025, this collection will be displayed in the exhibition “Charlie Chaplin: Memory of a Legend” at the Heritage Wing and Opera Wing lobbies of the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi Hotel. This marks the first time a valuable part of Paddy MacDonald’s work has been exhibited in Asia, offering the public a rare opportunity to admire the memorabilia associated with the life and career of “The King of Comedy, Charlie Chaplin.”
The exhibition introduces over 300 artifacts, publications, and rare documents, including antique film posters, original sheet music from the last century, as well as the July 6, 1925, edition of TIME Magazine, which marks the first time a film actor appeared on the cover of the prestigious American magazine. The collection was curated from many countries, such as Australia, the United States, Ireland, France, and Cuba, recreating the ceaseless creative journey of Charlie Chaplin, the legendary actor, composer, and filmmaker.

The event is made even more meaningful by taking place in the very location where Charlie Chaplin once stayed during his honeymoon in 1936. The Metropole Hotel currently maintains the Charlie Chaplin Suite, a special room in the Heritage Wing that was renovated in 2023, as a tribute to the historical connection with the famous comedian.
Speaking at the exhibition’s opening ceremony, Mr. MacDonald shared his thoughts on Charlie Chaplin’s legacy and the enduring power of culture, emphasizing: “A special hallmark of the Metropole Hanoi hotel is culture,” and he quoted Chaplin: “Culture is more infectious and has a deeper impact than any rules or theories on paper—Culture creates heroes and helps us accumulate inner strength.”
With a spirit of honoring culture and heritage, the exhibition “Charlie Chaplin: Memory of a Legend” not only offers a unique visual experience but also affirms Hanoi’s role as a gathering point for timeless artistic and historical values.
