The workshop encourages researchers and artists to participate, inspire and explore new research narratives and enhance collaboration through the documentary theatre model. A new, open form of theatre, this model requires no theatrical skills or background from participants. The documentary theatre form is where performance and research converge. In this workshop, authentic on-site recordings, in-depth interviews, visual materials, and community stories are transformed into new modes of presentation and performance. Rather than re-enacting or simulating events, works in this form allow the story to emerge directly from the original material.

Because of its inherently open and interdisciplinary nature, this workshop welcomes participants from a wide range of fields. You may be a student, researcher, community worker, journalist, writer, or organizer. Over the course of five days, participants will take on a shared task: to “breathe life” into real-world data. Specifically, the workshop offers opportunities to:

  • Learn how to transform research materials into performance under the guidance of veteran artists from Germany.
  • Explore new expressive forms for research.
  • Share and exchange with fellow researcher–storytellers from across Vietnam.

The workshop is fully funded. The Goethe-Institut Vietnam will cover accommodation in Đà Lạt and travel costs from your place of residence. The selection process begins upon receipt of registration and continues until June 20, 2025. After this date, the Goethe-Institut, The Run, and XplusX Studio will review all applications and announce the final selection by July 5, 2025.

Applicants are required to prepare the following materials:

  • CV outlining your work history and relevant projects;
  • Portfolio or project description featuring a past or ongoing research project that demonstrates your engagement with authentic materials;
  • Motivation letter (approx. 350 words) explaining why you wish to participate, what you hope to learn, and why your research-based stories deserve to be heard.

Please place all documents in a single Google Drive folder and submit the link in the registration form.

This event is part of the DokuTheater Workshop, a series of programs co-organized by the Goethe-Institut in Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The program in Vietnam is held in close collaboration with The Run and XplusX Studio. A selection of works from the Vietnam workshop will “travel” to Indonesia for presentation at the end of 2025.
