GOm Show: “The Sound from Ceramics to the Imperial Citadel”

Thanks to the warm reception from the first audiences, the GOm Show has the opportunity to return to the Hanoi Opera House on July 31, 2025. The sounds from ceramics have resonated, recounting life stories from across the S-shaped country—right in the heart of Hanoi. As a creative music art project, inspired by traditional Vietnamese ceramic culture—combining indigenous music, a system of creative musical instruments crafted from ceramics, and natural elements, the GOm Show opens up a magical world of sound, guiding listeners toward different emotional realms…

The GOm Show is a creative music art project, inspired by traditional Vietnamese ceramics, where ceramics is not merely a material but the soul itself—from jars, containers, vases, bottles…, unique musical instruments are born, creating a primal and captivating world of sound. GOm is a “boat” carrying sound across time, connecting people with nature, and history with the present. In every sound of GOm lies a Vietnamese cultural story waiting to be awakened.

“In today’s artistic flow, where everything moves too quickly with the rush of life, the ‘GOm Show’ emerges like a gentle refrain with the sounds of ceramics, of earth, and of the Vietnamese soul. And above all, it is the voice of artists who not only keep the fire burning but make that fire flare up in their own unique way.”

From the Material to the Spiritual – Music that Evokes, Not Explains

Inspired by ceramic culture, a heritage that is both tangible and deeply rooted in the psyche—the GOm creative music art project is a sonic journey using the technique of convention and symbolism, where the ceramic wheel becomes the “storyteller” and each ceramic instrument, such as jars, crocks, pots, gongs, bells, etc., becomes a “character” recounting the story of the earth and its people, using a language without words.

GOm does not descriptively recreate history. Instead, the show invites the audience to step into a world of perception, where layers of sound awaken the imagination, evoke cultural memories, and guide listeners through “morning – festival – afternoon – return” (sáng – hội – chiều – về), within a sound-cultural space that is diverse yet unified in the Vietnamese soul.

When Ceramics Speak Their Own Language

The GOm Show utilizes special musical instruments that the creative team researched and crafted themselves, such as: Trống Chum (Ceramic Jar Drum) (using stoneware jars and tire inner tubes to create ultra-low bass sounds like a giant bass); Trống Lãng (Flat Drum) (shaped like a bánh dày (flat round sticky rice cake), with a warm, deep sound like an echo from the earth’s core); Stoneware Gong and Stoneware Bell (creating sound from baked clay with a unique sonic structure, each piece is a distinct sound entity); Spinning Ceramic (resonating by hand spinning on the mouth of the ceramic, creating a soft, lingering effect); Đàn Niêu (Earthen Pot Lute) (gentle sounds chiming from an earthenware pot)…

On July 31, at the Hanoi Opera House, the artistic heart of the Capital, hundreds of audience members listened and found themselves in the pure sounds of the GOm show.
