Reviving emotions with the workshop “Soft Fragments”
On July 20, 2025, the workshop “Soft Fragments,” led by artist Nguyễn Linh Phương Thảo (THAORS), took place in an intimate and warm setting at the VCCA.
Old belongings often carry their own stories, acting as a fragment of the owner’s memory. At the workshop “Soft Fragments” (organized by the Vincom Center for Contemporary Art – VCCA), those stories were reborn once again, transforming scraps of fabric and old clothes into a medium that connects people with memory and creativity.

Participants were guided to use seemingly valueless materials such as fabric scraps and old clothes to create unique “soft sculptures.” Instead of applying complex techniques, the workshop focused on basic hand-stitching operations. Every stitch and thread, every piece of fabric cut and pieced together, demonstrated the meticulousness and patience of each individual.

The workshop encouraged participants to follow the contours of the available materials. This freedom helped each piece become unique, clearly expressing the imprint and story of its maker. The slow and gentle rhythm of the workshop facilitated a meditative practice, helping participants relieve stress and find inner healing.
Artist Nguyễn Linh Phương Thảo (THAORS)
The success of the “Soft Fragments” workshop owes a great deal to artist Nguyễn Linh Phương Thảo – THAORS. Born in 1995 in Hanoi, she graduated with a major in Painting from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts. Her artistic practice focuses on clarifying personal identity through internal and external self-reflection and questioning. She often uses assumptions and experiments to re-establish deficient personal boundaries.
For THAORS, art is not always interactive. Sometimes it is silence, sometimes constraint, but at other times, it is spontaneity. She incorporated this approach into the workshop, transforming familiar materials into a medium for participants to dialogue with themselves and explore the hidden corners of their souls. THAORS’s professionalism and creative spirit strongly inspired everyone, helping them overcome initial barriers and immerse themselves in the world of fabrics.
The workshop “Soft Fragments” served as an intimate invitation toward the connection between the individual and memory, between the hand and the material, and an opportunity for everyone to reflect on the lifecycle of materials and realize the value of rebirth. The workshop offered a pleasant and memorable experience, allowing participants to take home not only an artwork but also moments of quiet reflection on the small but meaningful things in life.
